Elementary Wellness Council
by Wendy Light
The Elementary Wellness Council has representatives from second through sixth grade and meets to discuss ways to improve student wellness and to have a healthy learning environment. The council made a written recommendation for some healthy choices to be sold at the concession stand during games, made suggestions on how to have small bursts of exercise throughout the day in the classroom to improve learning and encouraged their classmates to participate in a pilot after school Fitness Club.
The Cougar Fitness Club has met 4 times after school and 20 students who “volunteered” with parental permission have participated. Activities during the club included physically active games, a nutrition lesson, and making and eating a healthy snack. A survey will be taken to make suggestions and changes to the Fitness Club. More weeks are planned that will be open for other students who may have an interest.
