  • THOR

    Therapy Dog

Climax Springs R-4 wants to recognize and thank Thor.  Thor is a therapy dog that belongs to Jim and Tish Cumper.  They graciously volunteer their time with Climax Springs R-4 students.  They visit our elementary classes, they even dress like Santa, and Mrs. Clause and a helpful elf for our Christmas program.  We are very thankful for their time, and the students absolutely love Thor.  Thank you all for what you do.

Thor is a four-year old blonde German Shepard who weighs 110 pounds. He is a rescue dog and his owners are thrilled to be part of his life and to be able to share his abilities with whomever they can. Thor has been predominantly associated with military activities due to his owners close affiliation with the military. He has been a Red Cross volunteer and a frequent visitor to Fort Leonard Wood Hospital. Thor was a United Services Organization (USO) volunteer who greeted soldiers, airmen, and marines weekly at Fort Leonard Wood. Thor returned weekly to visit the Missouri Veterans Home in Saint James, and still returns there once a month to see old friends. He attends Climax Springs and Mack’s Creek elementary schools for reading classes bringing smiles to children. He has been part of finals preparation week at University of Missouri Science and Technology to help calm students as they prepare for upcoming tests. Thor visits retirement homes where he is a big hit, has been available for grief counseling at schools due to unfortunate circumstances. He loves to be out and about, to dress up, to be petted, and is extremely calm for a German Shepard.

The group Alliance of Therapy Dogs was founded in 1990 by a couple in Wyoming. The group has grown to more than thirteen thousand members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The purpose of the organization is to provide support and insurance for members who are involved in volunteer animal assisted interactions. Animal assisted interactions are defined as “any therapeutic intervention that intentionally includes or incorporates animals as part of the therapeutic process or environment”; these activities include visits to hospitals, special needs centers, schools and nursing homes. All teams are screened, tested with their animals, and registered. The objective is to share their special dogs in order to bring happiness and cheer to people, young and old alike.

Any breed of dog may become a therapy dog. They are called therapy dogs because they provide a therapeutic benefit to the general public; however, they are not eligible for public access rights like assistance dogs. There are three types of assistance dogs: GUIDE DOGS for the blind and visually impaired, HEARING DOGS for the deaf and hard of hearing, and SERVICE DOGS for people with disabilities other than those related to vision or hearing. Therapy dogs must always be under the control of the handler by a four foot leash.
